Wild Leeks/Ramps
Allium tricoccum - A native plant found in woodlands, Wild Leeks or Ramps, appear in early springtime then disappear until re-emerging the following spring. They are slow to spread and will colonize over time. They flower small pinkish-white blooms. Bees and flies will pollinate the flowers providing them with an early source of nectar and helping the ramps produce berries that drop in early summer.
Plant 4-6 inches apart to allow them to spread out.
Tip: A great native to fill in a woodland garden and provide a “fairy effect”. Companion plant with other woodland flowers such as bloodrot, trillium, and trout lily. Their flavor is a combination of spring onion and garlic and are delicious eaten on their own, used to flavor salads or other dishes, or you can dehydrate and grind them down into a seasoning.
