Wild Indigo

baptisia-image

Baptisia - A bushy, robust perennial, Wild Indigo or False Indigo may take up to 3 years to flower but develops into a beautiful shrub in the meantime. The bluish-green foliage is very attractive and provides a good backdrop to other flowering plants.  The flowers are blue-purple in color and resemble a pea-like look since it comes from the pea family. Blue False Indigo attracts many pollinators and is also a host plant for the Frosted Elfin, Wild Indigo Duskywing, and Hoary Edge butterflies. It is known for being a tough, long-lived plant that tolerates a variety of conditions from drought, poor soil, dry soil, and erosion.

Space 18-30 inches apart

Tip: It makes a strong statement in native landscape design and makes a great backdrop to other flowering plants since it gets about 4-5 feet in height. If you have an area of your yard that’s often the “trouble child”, this plant might be the perfect solution.
