Wild Blackberry
Rubus argutus - Commonly named Southern Blackberry, Sawtooth Blackberry, or Tall Blackberry after its high growth, wild blackberries are a fun addition to any yard. They spread very easily through their root systems so plant them along a fence or edge of the woods, just some place they can spread out. They’ll send up shoots their first year and in the second year start to grow fruit on woody stems. Watch for the tart berries to emerge in June-July!
Tip: Harvest the berries to enjoy raw as they have a delicious tart flavor otherwise you can cook them down to use in pies, desserts, compotes, oatmeal, etc. Wild Blackberries tend to have more of a tart flavor when raw compared to cultivated blackberries. Blackberries are full of antioxidants so they make an incredibly healthy snack.
