Western Sunflower
Helianthus occidentalis - A short, native sunflower that likes dry meadows and prairie gardens. Western Sunflower has star-like flowers and serves as a host plant for the Silvery checkerspot and Gorgone Checkerspot butterflies. It has a naked stalk with few leaves earning the nicknames “naked stemmed sunflower” or “few leaved sunflower”.
Space 12” apart.
Tip: Western Sunflower is a perfect addition to a prairie garden or area of your yard that tends to be more dry. We love to add this to our garden to provide another host plant for native pollinators and seeds to feed Doves and Goldfinches.
