Spotted Bee Balm
Monarda punctata – Spotted Bee Balm, Dotted Horsemint, or simply Bee Balm is a vibrant, native perennial that thrives in hot, dry conditions and sandy soils, making it a resilient beauty for Georgia gardens. With whorled, speckled blooms stacked like a floral tower and soft pink bracts, it’s a standout in both wildflower meadows and more curated native beds. Loved by native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, its long-lasting summer blooms are a reliable nectar source during the hottest parts of the season. Spotted Bee Balm is also a host plant for the Raspberry Pyrausta moth (Pyrausta signatalis).
Plant 12–18 inches apart.
Tip: Spotted Bee Balm thrives in lean, well-drained soil and adds height and texture to pollinator gardens, borders, and even vegetable patches where it helps deter pests. Dry the flowers and upper leaves to make an herbal tea traditionally used to soothe congestion, fevers, and digestive discomfort. Steep 5–10 minutes for a comforting sip of southern herbal medicine.
