Rubia tinctorum - An ancient dye plant, Madder is best known for its deep red roots, historically used to produce rich, natural pigments for textiles and artwork. This vining perennial features sprawling green stems, whorled leaves, and small, star-shaped yellow flowers that bloom in summer. Given time, its roots develop their signature red hue, ready for harvesting after two to three years. Madder thrives in well-drained soil and spreads readily, making it a great choice for naturalized areas or dye gardens.
