Ground Cherry

Physalis pruinosa – A cheerful, warm-season fruiting plant, Ground Cherry is loved for its papery lantern husks that conceal sweet, golden berries inside. Low-growing and sprawling, this easy-to-grow annual produces an abundance of tropical-flavored fruit often described as a blend of pineapple and vanilla with a hint of tomato. Rich in vitamins A and C and packed with antioxidants, Ground Cherries are delicious eaten fresh, tossed into salads, or made into jams and pies. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, this North American native is a charming addition to edible gardens and sunny raised beds.

Space plants about 18–24 inches apart.

Tip: Harvest fruits once they drop to the ground in their husks—this is when they’re perfectly ripe. Ground Cherries also grow beautifully in large containers, making them a fun and productive option for patio gardens.
