Solanum melanocerasum - Garden Huckleberry is actually a berry in the tomato family! There is a very stark difference in eating the berries raw vs. cooking them. The raw berries have a tart flavor similar to tomatillos while the cooked berries have a lightly sweet flavor similar to blackberries. The intense purple/black hues of the berry indicate just how high it is in antioxidants. The berries are a full dull black when they are ready to harvest and are wonderful used in jams, pies, syrups and fillings.

Tip: The berries mature to a dull black color and should be slightly soft to the touch; at this point the berries are perfect to eat and quite tasty.
