Astralagus
Astragalus membranaceus – A hardy perennial in the legume family, Astragalus is best known for its deep, medicinal roots used in traditional herbal practices to support immunity and vitality. This plant prefers full sun and well-drained soils, growing into a modest upright form with soft, compound leaves and pale yellow summer blooms. Though not flashy, it quietly enriches the soil through nitrogen fixation and supports beneficial insects by offering subtle habitat structure.
Space 12–18 inches apart.
Tip: Astragalus is ideal for herb gardens, medicinal borders, and permaculture designs. Pair with echinacea, yarrow, or anise hyssop for a low-maintenance and healing garden trio. Harvest roots after 2–3 years for maximum potency.
