Callicarpa americana - A native perennial understory shrub, American Beautyberry is most often found on woodland edges, moist thickets, wet slopes, or at the edges of swamps. It can grow up to 5 feet tall and sometimes taller depending on soil conditions. In the fall and early winter clusters of beautiful purple berries form that add color to the garden as the leaves begin to fall. Beautyberry serves as a natural food source for at least 10 varieties of birds going into the fall season. It also is considered a medicinal by Native Americans because of its antibacterial, antiviral, astringent, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.

Tip: If you struggle with finding shrubs to plant in the shade, this is the perfect understory perennial. We recommend planting on the edges of your woodline or in low lying areas of your yard that might hold water easier than others.
